Luke 23:22 Then he said to them the third time, “Why,
what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will
therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”
He offered Himself to be scourged to fulfil scriptures. Please note that no one can harm Jesus for He could easily call upon the angel to defend Him and kill all His persecutors and accusers.
I Pet 2:24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body
on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness— by
whose stripes you were healed.
Because of Jesus great love for His
believers, He Himself wanted to be scourged so that by His stripes, Christians
can be healed of their sicknesses and also their hurts, sorrows, fears,
worries, doubts, bitterness, and insecurities
Isa 53:3-6 He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Mat 27:20-22 But the chief priests and elders persuaded
the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The
governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release
to you?” They said, “Barabbas!” Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with
Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!”
The multitudes, who only a few days earlier
had welcome Jesus as King of Israel while He entered Jerusalem on a donkey,
were so quickly deceived by the priesthood to crucify the innocent Jesus
against the judgment of the governor. They wanted to crucify their Messiah.
Mat 27:23 Then the governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”
Jews Condemned Themselves
Mat 27:24-25 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail
at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands
before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just Person.
You see to it.” And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and
on our children.”
The Jews condemned themselves by killing
the innocent and putting the innocent blood upon themselves and their
descendants. At the death of Jesus, the Jews (Israelites) were removed from
being the people of God thereby ending the Mosiac law or Judaism.
